Detailed Vipre Review:

Vipre or the Virus Intrusion Protection Remediation Engine is specifically designed to maximize your computer’s performance by combining antivirus and antispyware in unison, into a single, innovative tool. This new combination of assets gives you a high performance application that is low on system resources, and makes it easy for you to protect your personal computer.

ProsVipre Likes:

Unified AntiVirus and Antispyware: All of us have experienced conflicts between our antivirus and antispyware applications which make them less reliable. But with this combination of the two, antispyware and antivirus, spyware, viruses, trojans, and all other malware are kicked out of your computer. Deep in the core of the new Vipre is a unified antivirus and antispyware engine that converges during the detection of all types of malware to produce a more efficient and powerful system.

User-friendly interface: Navigation and using Vipre is very user-friendly. Known to be designed for an unobtrusive user experience, keeping notification pop-ups and warnings to a minimum was one of the keys to achieving this feat. You will immediately notice that the user interface is very straightforward. Take this for an example, running a scan is as easy as hitting the Scan tab and then the Scan button. That’s it!

Effective malware blocking mechanism: Vipre has a reliable malware blocking mechanism. Clicking on a malware file is enough to trigger Vipre’s scan, and it wiped out the malware installers on sight. The software didn’t waste time waiting for a confirmation from the user to delete the files, it just did the job and reported its action. Even though Vipre did allow a handful of threats to install executables on the computer, in every single case it suppressed those executables from launching.

Clean unistallation: One of our headaches as customers of antivirus software are well aware of, is the uninstallation of the software. However, Vipre was able to solve this problem. If ever we decide to remove Vipre, we only need to use the Windows Control Panel’s Add and Remove Software feature then a reboot. After a reboot you will find no traces of Vipre in your file directory or system registry on your computer.

Additional useful tools: The new version of Vipre, features other useful tools such as a secure file eraser that writes 1s and 0s over deleted files, a history cleaner that goes beyond just what’s in your Internet browser cache, and something called PC Explorer, which reveals processes and services running that are suspect or known to be malicious.

ProsVipre DisLikes:

Lengthy and complex installation and initial configuration: After installation, there’s a slight lag time which some people might find confusing. This period is used by the software to download the latest malware signatures but it takes a very lengthy 10-15 minutes. This is because Vipre installs without a signature database. The initial database download may take ten to fifteen minutes, but thereafter most updates are incremental.

Unreliable scan results: A lot of user complaints were pertaining to the inability of Vipre to eliminate all rootkits in their systems. We noticed that many modified samples evaded Vipre’s detection. Changing the filenames, tweaking some non-executable bytes inside the program caused Vipre to misrecognize rootkits and left them within the computer. It totally missed several virulent worms and failed to completely block more than half of those it initially did detect. Perhaps Vipre’s signatures need more flexibility.

Little certification from independent testing labs: The downside of being a new comer in the AntiVirus competition is a lack of certification from the established testing labs. Virus Bulletin hasn’t put Vipre to the test, nor has ICSA Labs. And neither of the European labs AV-Test or AV-Comparatives has evaluated it as yet. Rest assured we will be keeping an eye for Vipre’s scores if ever they will be released.

Degraded system performance: A lot of users were reporting that their systems slowed down upon the installation of Vipre. We were surprised that it took a long time before we could start using other applications when Vipre is active. Upon opening a directory with file extensions that VIPRE is monitoring, Windows Explorer did not respond normally. It took minutes before we would start browsing files. Furthermore, an estimated duration of two minutes is significantly added to the boot time of every computer with Vipre on it. This is relatively huge compared to the 15 seconds of other leading antivirus providers.

ProsVipre Bottom Line:

Vipre is designed to be a high performance product, without compromising on detection and remediation of viruses, trojans, worms, and spyware but the performance issues that we noticed while using the program will require attention by Sunbelt Software before we can provider a higher recomendation.

Buy Vipre Antivirus for only $29.95 and get up to 3 computers protected for that price!
